  • The Polecat Inn in Prestwood: vegan options

    Preparing myself for jacket potato and beans, Adam and I ventured to a local pub for Saturday lunch. Living in the scenic Chilterns should afford a wealth of cosy, traditional pubs with real fires and local ales. The drawback is normally the vegetarian option unless you like goat’s cheese tart. And for vegans? Bring on the no butter jacket potato and beans.

    The menu at The Polecat Inn in Prestwood was different. In a good way. One of the FOUR vegetarian options on the menu was vegan and there was also a vegan special. I was all over the stuffed aubergine with spicy roast red pepper sauce on cous cous with salad. It was great. When we told the bar person how delicious the food was we learnt that the head chef is vegetarian. That explains it all. Someone who understands that a meal with no meat, fish or cheese it isn’t half a meal. I wonder what he does with tofu. The aubergine in my special was caramelized, melt in the mouth, shiny and goey as you sometimes find in a Turkish or Japanese restaurant. Can someone please tell me how do they do that?
